City Church St. Mary Gräfenhainichen

The origins of the town church of St. Mary, a medieval building at its core, date back to the Romanesque period.

On the church square is the Evangelical Town Church of St. Mary, a medieval building whose origins probably date back to the Romanesque period. The oldest parts of the present church date back to the Gothic period. The fieldstone church, built around 1300, was cruciform and flat-roofed.

After the destruction in 1637, the current image of the church is determined by the Baroque reconstruction of 1658 - 1666. The 57 m high square neo-Gothic brick tower was built in 1866/67.
In the interior of the church, the quality Baroque furnishings predominate.

It can be assumed that Paul Gerhardt was baptized, as was customary at the time, one day after his birth, in the church of his birthplace.
