Heather blossom in the Düben Heath

Düben Heath Nature Park

The Dübener Heide, located south of Lutherstadt Wittenberg and north of Leipzig, is embedded in the natural river landscape between the Mulde and Elbe rivers.

It is the largest mixed forest area in central Germany and was declared a nature park in 1992. Numerous hiking trails and nature trails lead through the beautiful heath forests and moorlands. It goes past small forest lakes, romantic clearings and contemplative places.

Nature parks occupy about 27 percent of Germany's land area and preserve and develop nature and landscape with and for people. The nature park Dübener Heide arose from an initiative of the region's inhabitants to put a stop to the ever-expanding lignite mining and to protect the remaining nature.500 km of marked trails are waiting to be discovered in the 75,000-hectare nature park area.

Cranes and white-tailed eagles circle over tranquil ponds and gently flowing lakes. Up to 350 different butterfly species as well as 169 bird species give the Dübener Heide a home. The nature park is thus also an oasis for nature lovers and an insider tip for urbanites.

In addition to the natural beauty, architectural sights can be discovered. The dreamy moated castle Reinharz, two wonderful spas in Bad Schmiedeberg and Bad Düben, as well as historic mills are just some of the many destinations that enchant the visitor.
