Ferropolis: between lignite past and renewable energies

The plans and developments of the industrial monument of energy production regarding the future of energies are manifold: At the annual festival MELT! possibilities of energy saving are researched and tested within the Green Music Initiative. Both the upstream chain (e.g. mobility/travel in the designated hotel train, the Melt! train) and the energy consumption of the event itself are being investigated. The goal is to be able to host a "Zero Emission Festival Melt!", i.e. the complete energy supply of the festival via the use of renewable energies.

Since 2011, there has been a photovoltaic system on the halls with a capacity of 210 kilowatts peak. The goal is to also use the electricity directly for the operation of stages and technology in Ferropolis at the site of the lignite. Economic electricity storage systems still need to be developed for this purpose. Ferropolis therefore founded the Energieavantgarde Anhalt project in 2013 with Bauhaus Dessau, the Federal Environment Agency and many other partners. The resulting Energieavantgarde Anhalt e. V. is a network of actors in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld-Wittenberg region that works in cooperation with national and European partners on the sustainable transformation of the local energy system. Here, it is tested what the energy systems of the future will look like and what benefits they will bring to the local people.
