At Lake Gröbern, closeness to nature is the focus and a modern vacation resort attracts people seeking peace and quiet, families and water sports enthusiasts to the Dübener Heide.

In 1993, the Gröbern open pit mine was closed as the last open pit mine in the Bitterfeld area. With the flooding of the residual open pit, the almost 370-hectare Gröbern Lake was created from 2004 to 2010.

Directly on the Gröbern Lake is today the lake and forest resort Gröbern. Here not only can be bathed, also water sportsmen come at their expense. In addition to standup paddling and fishing, it is also possible to rent bicycles, rowing boats, canoes and rafts. A large children's playground, boulder garden and the wild animal enclosure at the lakeside cottage are available for younger guests. Courses can be booked at the diving school on the lake.

The logo of the resort features the Gröbern forest elephant. In 1984, the remains of a 120,000-year-old forest elephant were uncovered in the Gröbern open pit mine. The elephant was a full-grown bull around 40 years old with a shoulder height of 4.2 meters, a weight of 5 tons and tusks about 2.5 meters long. Today, the skeleton of the Gröbern forest elephant is exhibited in the State Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Halle, and a copy can be found in Ferropolis.

At the lake and forest resort on the south side of the lake is a beach with numerous water sports. Directly at the lake, the resort offers a rental station with bicycles, rowing boats (with and without electric motors), pedal boats and stand-up paddles. These can be rented by the hour or by the day. The beach areas with soft sand invite you to relax, the lake promises to cool down on hot days and a water trampoline provides lots of fun.
