German Photo Museum Markkleeberg

The history of photography from its beginnings to the present.

The permanent exhibition in the German Photo Museum in the agra Park Markkleeberg is entitled "PHOTOFASCINATION" and presents the history of photography from its beginnings to the present with more than 2,000 exhibits on 1,500 square meters of exhibition space. To see are beside the most interesting camera models from 1850 to today, utensils of a darkroom as well as old showcase cabinets with contemporary photo frames.

Unique in Germany compared to other photo museums is the exhibition connection of photo technology and image. More than 70,000 pieces comprise the collection of historical and contemporary photos of the German Photo Museum Markkleeberg, a small part of which is shown in the permanent exhibition as well as and in changing special exhibitions.

Saxony was the cradle of the German camera industry, with internationally known production sites in Leipzig and the Ore Mountains. In 1913, the first chair for photography was also established at the University of Leipzig.

The German Photography Museum Markkleeberg building was built in 1997 by the Free State of Saxony and operated as the second part of the German Agricultural Museum Stuttgart-Hohenheim. From 1997 to 2003, various exhibitions focused on the history of GDR agriculture and agricultural exhibitions at the agra trade fair park in Leipzig-Markkleeberg. With its exhibition levels curving around a central rotunda, the building's architecture is reminiscent of New York's Guggenheim Museum.
