The construction of the Provinzialchaussee Berlin-Wittenberg-Bitterfeld-Halle around 1820 and the commissioning of the railroad line Wittenberg - Bitterfeld in 1859 gave the town of Gräfenhainichen a convenient location. If in the past the writings still had to be printed outside the city, this changed with the establishment of the first printing house in 1874.
The Museum of Letterpress Printing - moved from Oranienbaum Castle to Gräfenhainichen in 1992 - was founded and developed by philosopher Jürgen Helbig. The occasion was the International Gutenberg Year 1968, a world event, and the associated tribute to Carl-Heinrich Schulze (1837-1905), founder of the Gräfenhainichen letterpress printing trade.
