UNESCO Castle Church of All Saints

Martin Luther's posting of the theses on the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church brought the city to world fame.

Martin Luther's posting of the theses on the door of Wittenberg Castle Church on October 31, 1517, brought Wittenberg to world fame. With the theses, the reformer spoke out against the misuse of the gospel and especially against the business-like trade in indulgences. He thus changed the world, initiated the Reformation and made history. The castle church was built in 1506 on the foundation stones of the original castle of the Elector of Saxony. "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott", this line of text from Martin Luther's well-known psalm and hymn is emblazoned in large letters on the steeple of this impressive place of worship.

Today, Luther's grave and the final resting place of the reformer Philipp Melanchthon can be visited inside the church.
