Wind farm on the high dump "Barbarahöhe

A wind farm was built on the spoil heap of the Gröbern open pit mine after it was closed down.

Between Zschornewitz and Gröbern is the "Barbarahöhe". When lignite was still being mined in the Gröbern open pit mine, the overburden was dumped on the Barbarahöhe from 1986. This resulted in a spoil heap about 138 meters high, the "Barbarahöhe". The Gröbern open pit mine mainly supplied the Zschornewitz and Vockerode power plants with lignite for the generation of electricity.
After the Gröbern open pit mine was shut down in the 1990s, a wind farm with a total of eight turbines was built on Barbarahöhe. Today, the overburden with the wind farm is a site for alternative energy generation. It offers good conditions for wind energy use, as it towers over the surrounding terrain by about 50 meters. In addition, the Barbarahöhe offers a beautiful view of the former lignite mining area.
