Nowhere else in the area of the former GDR is the structural change from an ecological emergency area to sustainably redeveloped wonderful recreational landscapes as clearly comprehensible as in Bitterfeld on the Great Goitzsche Lake. Once upon a time, the landscape was dominated by open-cast lignite mining and environmental pollution. The open-cast mining area served the coaling of briquette factories, power plants and the chemical industry in the Bitterfeld-Wolfen area. A special feature was the extraction of "Bitterfeld amber". This began in 1975 and amber was mined industrially until 1993, which was unique in Germany. Even today, recoverable amber is said to be in the Goitzsche.

Today, a well-developed network of cycling and hiking trails surrounds the Goitzsche Lake and thus also offers many opportunities for joggers and skaters. Who likes it comfortably, which explores the lake with the passenger ship, pirate ship or even by catamaran. From the Pegelturm, the Roter Turm or the nearby Bitterfelder Bogen you can enjoy a fantastic view over the region. Various gastronomic facilities are available at Mühlbeck Beach, the Amber Promenade and the city harbor. Houseboats, floating vacation homes, a camping park and vacation homes near the water invite you to an extended stay at the Goitzsche.

Three lidos at the Goitzsche invite you to spend a relaxing day at the lake: the Mühlbeck lido, the lido at the Pegelturm and the Niemecker See lido.
